Solidification & Flow Analysis
MTI Product Engineering utilizes the finest solidification software available, called MagmaSoft, to identify solidification and flow problems and correct them before tooling is ever cut. In addition to solidification and filling, MagmaSoft can simulate shrink areas, internal stresses in the part, cooling gradients, sand mold erosion, and microstucture. At MTI, this powerful software runs on the fastest NT machines available, giving our engineers a window inside the mold and enabling them to predict the casting outcome before a single drop of iron is poured.
MagmaSoft is used on 100% of our new ductile iron product launches, and it ensures our customers that every possible effort is made to provide the highest quality casting in the shortest amount of time.
Sample Simulation

The downloadable sample shows a simulation of how the mold fills. The colors correspond to the velocity of the metal as it fills the mold (there is a scale to the right of the view). This particular simulation demonstrates how all the impressions fill at approximately the same rate and at the same time. This is something we strive for with all our jobs, as it helps to ensure uniform characteristics between castings. We use this type of simulation to locate and help eliminate high velocity areas which could cause erosion, sand grain, and trapped air defects.
